That's why I judge the three on the same dimensions: warmth-to-weight, moisture behavior, durability, and cost per unit of performance.
Dimension 1: Warmth-to-Weight Ratio
The hollow core in Thermolite is the whole point. Still air is a better insulator than polyester fiber itself, and hollow fibers trap air in the lumen. If you're sourcing rPET, ask for a Global Recycled Standard certificate. GRS verifies recycled content, but it does not verify performance. We require both GRS and our own mechanical tests.
There's a catch. If a recycled poly product wears out after twenty washes, the carbon math changes. For a duvet cover set king, I'd look at the shell's weave and thread count before deciding between recycled and virgin fill. A well-made rPET fill can last for years; a poorly spun recycled fiber can pill and flatten quickly. In that case, the original energy saving gets canceled out by an early replacement.
Also ask for an OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certificate if the textile touches skin. It tests for a list of harmful substances. It's not a warmth test, but it's a cheap way to avoid a compliance problem later.
The 5-Minute Quality Check That Prevents Problems

Before finalizing any order, run the checklist:
- Confirm the insulation weight in grams per square meter, not just the brand.
- Test compression set after 10 cycles for sleeping bags or liners.
- Do a water-impact test on the seam tapes if the product is a waterproof boot.
- Match Pantone colors on the actual fabric; Delta E below 2 is the usual target.
- Check the care label temperature and drying method before production, not after.
That checklist cost us maybe $1,200 in sample testing last year and saved us an estimated $8,000 in potential rework. The principle seems obvious, but it's the first thing that gets skipped in a rush.
So, Which Should You Choose?

Recycled polyester is the choice when sustainability goals are driving the spec and you don't need maximum loft per gram. Regular polyester makes sense for cost-sensitive projects where you have margin for more fill weight instead of clever fiber geometry.
But honestly, the label is not the spec. The point is to compare numbers, not names. And if you're stuck between recycled polyester vs polyester, ask for the GRS certificate, the wash test, and a color proof. Then decide.
