Why 100 Gram Thermolite Insulation Is Not a Warmth Rating (And What Procurement Should Ask First)
I've spent the last six years buying materials for a mid-size outdoor textile company. We make sleeping bag liners, insulated boot liners, winter accessories, and a few pet products for brands that do not want their names attached to failures. My annual materials budget is about $180,000, and I've kept every order in a cost-tracking system. I still bought the wrong material twice before I understood the problem.
The issue isn't price. The issue is the number on the label. When you search for thermolite, you see 100 gram Thermolite insulation, product names with labels like Thermolite 30W Solar, and pages that treat those terms as if they mean the same thing everywhere. They don't.
The surface problem: a number looks like a spec
Early on, I compared three suppliers for a sleeping bag liner project. All three quoted 100 gram Thermolite insulation. Supplier A was the most expensive. Supplier B was 14% cheaper. I almost signed with B until I asked for the detail behind the 100 gram.
A hundred grams can describe insulation weight, fabric weight, or the whole liner weight depending on who wrote the line. It does not say how the fiber is shaped, how much loft it has, or how it performs when compressed. People think 100 gram Thermolite insulation is a warmth spec. It's not a bad starting point, but it's only a starting point.
Consumers make the same mistake in a different aisle. Someone types what is a good thread count for bed sheets? because thread count is easy to find. The honest answer is usually 200 to 400, but the reason is not the count itself. It's that a thread count can be inflated by counting multi-ply yarns multiple times.
A real sheet thread count guide should explain that part. If you only buy the number, you can end up with 1,500-count sheets that feel like a tent and still count as 1,500. In my house we learned that after one overly expensive set. The number looked great. The sleep did not.
The deeper problem: labels don't share a definition
The deeper issue is that most product names and specs are not universal measurements. They are marketing vocabulary unless a standard is attached.
Take a phrase like Thermolite 30W Solar. If I'm being fair, that could be a useful internal grade. A supplier may have a documented definition for it: a specific fiber blend, a certain fabric construction, a measured warmth method. The problem appears when it's used as a shortcut in a quote, without the method.
One vendor told me Thermolite 30W Solar had the same performance as our usual 100 gram Thermolite insulation. When I asked which standard backed that comparison, the reply was that it was 'their grade name.' Maybe true. Maybe fine. But grade names are not interchangeable unless the data sheet explains them.
I've learned to ask what is not on the spec sheet before asking what is on it.
The same logic applies to fleece dog blankets. If you have sourced even a few, you know that grams per square meter (GSM) dominates the buying conversation. A 300 GSM fleece dog blanket sounds sturdier than a 250 GSM blanket. It can be. But GSM does not measure fiber quality, pilling resistance, or whether the blanket will keep a short-haired dog warm. It measures weight. Weight is not performance.
In the pet blanket case, I didn't have a formal verification process for fleece. That cost us. A supplier delivered 300 GSM fleece that looked perfect in the sample and pilled after the first few washes. When I went back to the contract, the contract specified GSM. The supplier had met the spec. The blanket was still wrong for the end customer. We had to replace 400 units, ship them, and absorb the freight. The lesson was not to add more numbers to the purchase order. The lesson was to add a test method.
What the confusion actually costs
You might think a wrong perception of a material spec only matters if the material fails. In my spreadsheet, the cost showed up earlier. On one order, Vendor A quoted higher unit price but included the type of fiber, the test method, the fill weight per square meter, and a sample for approval. Vendor B quoted lower, but the spec line was only 100 gram Thermolite insulation.
I wanted to choose B. The data said B saved around $4,200 on that order. My gut said to wait. I waited, asked B for the same detail, and the price went up by $3,100 because the original number didn't include the facing fabric, the scrim, or the construction needed to make the insulation usable. I didn't lose the order. But I got close.
That pattern repeats in every product I buy: attractive numbers become expensive after adding details, freight, returns, and end-customer goodwill. When I audited last year's spending, I found that 22% of our project overruns traced back to vague material descriptions. Not bad material. Vague descriptions.
The fix starts with a harder question
So what should you ask before you compare price? In my experience, ask for the definition first. If a seller can't explain what the number means, then the number is not a specification. This is not a small compliance issue. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), claims about a product have to be truthful, not misleading, and substantiated with evidence. A spec sheet without a method is hard to substantiate.
I still use the simple phrases that customers use. I search for fleece dog blankets. I check a good thread count. I look at Thermolite insulation offers. But now my next click is the spec sheet, and the first question is: what is being measured, and how?
When suppliers answer that, the price discussion becomes much easier. A transparent supplier might look 8% more expensive in the first quote. But the total cost, including samples, testing, rejects, and rework, is usually lower.
Here's the short checklist I use now:
- If a product says 100 gram Thermolite insulation, ask for the fiber type, the construction, and the applicable test method.
- If a product says Thermolite 30W Solar, ask what the 30W stands for and how this product was validated.
- If a product says it's a high thread count sheet, ask whether the count is single ply and which standard was used.
- If a product says it's a fleece dog blanket, ask for density, fiber quality, and abrasion or pilling test data, not just GSM.
That might feel like more work than just picking the lowest number. It is. But after six years and a fair amount of rework, I am convinced that the most expensive material spec is the one you cannot verify. The cheapest product is usually the one with the clearest definition.
