Thermolite, Viscose Material Fabric, Chair Upholstery Fabric, Elastane vs Polyester: A Fiber Decision Guide

Earlier this year, a product developer tagged Thermolite® on a spec sheet as the outer shell fabric for a winter boot. I had to stop and re-explain: Thermolite is not a shell. It’s an insulation fiber. That kind of mix-up is more normal than it should be, and it’s the reason I wrote this guide.

I’ve spent the last eight years sourcing fabrics for clothing, footwear, and a small number of upholstery projects. We take roughly 150–200 rush requests a year, so I don’t have time for “universal best material” claims. Neither should you. The question isn’t really Thermolite vs viscose material fabric vs fabric for chair upholstery. The question is: what is the physical job of the textile?

Scenario 1: Keeping Heat In Without Adding Bulk

If you are working on a sleeping bag liner, boot liner, winter boot, or a mid-layer insulation piece, Thermolite is the right starting point.

Thermolite is a synthetic insulation brand currently in The LYCRA Company portfolio. It was originally developed through DuPont/INVISTA, and it is usually polyester-based. The fiber works by trapping still air in tiny spaces. That trapped air is what creates warmth. It’s a useful product when you need a good warmth-to-weight ratio, relatively good compressibility, and faster drying than several natural-fiber options.

Some catalogs include a product-specific label like Soto Thermolite. From a textile purchasing perspective, don’t treat that as a new material category. The word that matters is still Thermolite. The product label should tell you whether the insulation is being used in a liner, a boot, a sleeping bag liner, or something else.

If you expect Thermolite to handle dirt, abrasion, or cleaning the way a seat surface would, you’re in the wrong scenario. Thermolite is insulation, not a substitute for an upholstery fabric. It doesn’t need to be; it belongs inside a layered system. And I’m not going to promise it’s the warmest insulation on the planet—anyone who says that from a fiber name alone is guessing.

Scenario 2: Softness, Drape, and Breathability Matter More Than Abuse

The phrase “viscose material fabric” can confuse people because it sounds like a single textile type. In fact, viscose is a semi-synthetic fiber made from cellulose. Wood pulp is chemically dissolved, then regenerated and spun into yarn. The resulting fabric often feels smooth against the skin, hangs well, and can take color beautifully.

That makes viscose useful when comfort is the first priority: blouses, dresses, skirts, linings, scarves, and light drape-heavy garments. It also makes viscose a trap for anyone who buys on touch alone and forgets to check wear conditions.

When wet, viscose loses much of its strength. Compared with most polyester, it also does not age as well under repeated friction. A carefully laundered dress can be perfectly fine. But if the same viscose material fabric is going to sit under constant movement and pressure, it will usually disappoint.

In 2024, a hospitality customer asked for a soft fabric for chair upholstery. The woven sample looked great and felt even better, but it was basically a garment-weight viscose blend. It failed the abrasion test for commercial seating. We shipped a different fabric and still lost about a week on the schedule. That’s the cost of choosing by hand feel instead of end use.

Scenario 3: The Fabric Will Live on a Chair

When a chair is the final destination, stop evaluating fabric the way you’d evaluate a garment.

For a real fabric for chair upholstery, I ask three practical questions:

Does it sit near a window with direct sunlight? Are people going to slide on and off it repeatedly? Will it need frequent cleaning?

If the answer to any of those is yes, you need a textile engineered for upholstery. That often means a tightly woven synthetic-grade fabric, solution-dyed polyester, nylon, or a wool blend with an acrylic backcoat. Those options don’t always feel as luxurious as viscose, but they resist abrasion and cleaning far better.

Commercial upholstery fabric suppliers often quote a Martindale abrasion result. I won’t give you a magic number because end use varies. But when a commercial chair spec requires 50,000 rubs, you need a much more abrasion-resistant product than what a standard decorative dress fabric can provide.

Viscose blends do appear in low-traffic decorative chairs. But pure viscose on a frequently used seat? I’d rather tell you “wrong first choice” now than let you buy something soft that begins to show damage within a couple of months.

Scenario 4: Is Elastane and Polyester the Same?

No. The direct answer is no. Elastane and polyester are not the same, even though they often appear together on a label.

Polyester is a polymer fiber made from petroleum-derived polyethylene terephthalate, or PET. It’s strong, holds its shape, resists damage from sunlight, and shows up in everything from T-shirts to boat upholstery.

Elastane is generic name for the material also known as spandex or Lycra. It’s a polyurethane-based synthetic fiber designed to stretch and recover. Polyester gives structure. Elastane gives flex. That’s why a common blend like 85% polyester and 15% elastane uses polyester as the body and elastane as the motion component.

A fabric labeled 100% polyester can still feel stretchy because of a knit construction. But a true stretch fabric usually contains elastane. If you see a garment tag that asks “polyester and elastane” and you’re treating them as identical, you’re missing the most important part of the spec: the ratio matters.

How Do You Decide Which Scenario You’re In?

Write one sentence describing the product use. That sentence decides the material family.

  • If it says “keep someone warm in cold conditions without making them bulky,” start with synthetic insulation products like Thermolite.
  • If it says “make a flowing garment that feels soft against skin,” viscose is a legitimate candidate.
  • If it says “sit in a restaurant lobby for years,” look for an abrasion-tested upholstery fabric, not a dress-weight viscose.
  • If it says “fit closely and snap back into shape,” you need a mix of polyester or nylon with elastane.

No fiber does every job. The best material is the one that matches the surface, the use pattern, and the cleaning plan.

Quick final note: this overview is accurate for common textile grades at the time of writing. Fiber suppliers revise product lines and formulations regularly, so verify current performance data before placing a large or rush order.
